Fostering Cultural Understanding at Darra State School
Embracing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures
The priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures in our curriculum offers students unique insights into Australia's oldest continuous living cultures. Through the Australian Curriculum, students discover the resilience and diversity of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Objectives for All Students
Our goal is to instill in all students an understanding of the strength and resilience inherent in the identities and cultures of Aboriginal Peoples and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, despite the historical and ongoing impacts of colonisation.
Darra State School's Approach
At Darra State School, we are committed to deepening students' appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, knowledge, and traditions. Our focus on closing the gap for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students is central to our mission.
Recognising the importance of teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in a culturally sensitive manner, we strive to involve local First Nations People whenever feasible. Furthermore, our educators are dedicated to expanding their understanding of First Nations perspectives, histories, and cultures. This dedication ensures the delivery of culturally appropriate lessons using materials endorsed by First Nations People.
Presently, we are working with Inala Wangarra and the Inala School cluster as we create a First Nations Advisory Body to the schools. This partnership will allow our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to help shape our schools by providing opportunities for all students to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of their histories, cultures, knowledge, and traditions.
